In a lovely turn of events, Taylor and I were able to go to a gala. 1,2,3, curve the G: a gala! For someone who spends a lot of time watching reruns of Elementary with cupcake crumbs sprinkled on my shirt, it’s surprising that we were invited at all. But my work happened to sponsor the event and Taylor happened to be a teacher. Serendipity!

Governor Spencer Cox & First Lady Abby Cox gave speeches on the importance of education, one of those being the key to absolving divisive parties. In politics, sure, but in any contentious relationship, too.
I have long believed that the more educated someone becomes, the less opinionated they are 🙂 At the very least, compassion and reflection increase when someone takes the time to understand the opposing view.
Anyway, that speech was a small piece of the evening. The night was spent eating incredible food with incredible company. Plaques and prizes were awarded to educators across the state. Teachers were praised and celebrated in keynote addresses, live orchestra, and the chance to dress in black tie. Everyone needs to feel like royalty every once in a while. 🙂

One teacher awardee from Whitehorse High School shared the necessity of educational resources for her Native American students. Kids in San Juan County are some of the most impoverished in the state. This teacher spoke of how charity abroad is a wholesome endeavor, but to also remember “those who we share the backyard with”. I loved this message. It’s a good thing to support folks abroad, like the Middle Eastern and Ukrainian refugees. Let’s also remember the families here instate who need support, too.
One of my favorite charities is Donors Choose. This website makes it easy to fund classroom projects from all over the nation. In the past, I’ve made monthly donations to schools in my home county. Thanks to this teacher, I know I need to look for my local schools and for schools steeply underfunded in Utah. Not just one or the other. (If you want your heartstrings pulled further, teachers in Blanding, UT are asking for desks and books for their students. Definitely look those up if that appeals to you.)
The honors in education gala was a beautiful night to remember. Thank you to my company for sending us and to my dear husband Taylor for dedicating his life as a teacher.
