tricky treats on April Fool’s Day

April Fool’s Day snuck up on us this year. (Username checks out.)

I’m all for pranks and surprises… but only if they leave someone in smiles and not tears. My mom was a perfect example for this. When I was a little gullible, my mom “April fooled” us kids that we were having eggs for our after school snack (which I loathed). The “eggs” turned out to be egg shaped cherry jello balls, shaped by a deviled egg mold. It was a trick that came with 🙂 Another time, now as a very gullible teenager, my dad asked me if I wanted a “hurts donut”. Of course, I happily and naively agreed, and was rewarded with a light smack on my shoulder. Mom caught wind of Dad’s giggles (and my pouting), and immediately sent him to pick up a gas station donut for me. I think Mom did it right; the really good tricks come with treats 🙂

This year Arrow and Archer really got into the spirit of April Fool’s. Some of the ideas were silly and fun, while other tricks would certainly leave at least one child in tears. I put my foot down on the mean ones (much to their disappointment… why are moms always a wet blanket?) and resolved to teach them the way of how my mom did April Fool’s.

First up: the classic “eggs for after school snack”, featuring chocolate covered marshmallow eggs 🙂

Arrow’s “AW MOM YOU TRICKSTER” face cracks me up. She thought this was pretty clever.

A few hours later, I put out glasses of “punch” to drink with supper. The punch line (heh) for this prank was that the cups were filled with cherry Jello.

Arrow caught onto the trick pretty quick. I can still see the boys tipping their heads alllll the way back, trying to get that “punch” to pour into their mouths before they realized it wasn’t actually a drink lol.

That should have been the end of the holiday, but Arrow had one more trick of her own. She told me to go outside to look for a bowl of applesauce that she had hidden. We played “hot or cold” until I unearthed this beauty:

“Mommy, do you get it?! It’s apples and chocolate sauce! Since you don’t like applesauce you got tricked into apples and chocolate sauce!”

Have I mentioned that Arrow is literal perfection?

April Fool’s Day ended with us happy little fools content with our treats and kindnesses with each other.
