On the hook for bluegills

My sweet Uncle Darren invited the kids to learn to fish with him. They’d never been, and I haven’t fished since I was a kid myself, so we were eager to give it a try.

I was wondering what the kids would think of sitting around as we waited for the fish to bite. As a kid, I remember feeling bored out of my mind, hoping a carp would take my worm. (And sometimes, it didn’t!)

But Darren chose a good first-timers spot to learn the basics of fishing. A bluegill or pumpkin seed took the bait every 10 minutes or so! The kids took turns reeling it in and tossing the confused fish back into the water.

Meanwhile, as we waited for a catch, Taylor and I enjoyed the quietness of the morning (amongst chasing down Sander, reminding the bigger kids to not jiggle the fishing pole, and eyeing this suspicious goose).

Poor little Archer took an accidental step too far off the bank and found himself half-submerged in the yucky, algae infested waters. 😦

I thought these black and white “mutt” ducks were pretty.

Arrow found this sharp little hook laying on the ground beneath our feet.

Determined to become an expert fisherwoman within the hour, Arrow sweet talked me into tying it onto a rad little stick that she had found.

Her only catch with her fishing pole was catching a dead worm. Still, she was pretty pleased!

It was a great new hobby to learn on a quiet Saturday morning. Thanks for taking us Uncle Darren!
