a smoothie chef-in-training

We have a pretty solid Sunday routine. Taylor makes cheese crisps and orange julius for lunch. I make something a little fancy for dinner. It only recently occurred to me that this Sunday meal routine was the perfect time to work in some grown-up training in for the tots.

Arrow kicked off the training by helping prepare the Fancy Sunday Dinner. Although, I should really say that I was the helper, since she had it pretty well under control!

For the main entree, we had sheet pan paninis. (I love me a good sheet pan recipe any day… SO easy to assemble.)

My job was to slice the dinner rolls & cheese and operate the oven. Arrow took on layering the cheese and ham and organizing the sandwiches on the platter.

To drink, Arrow made a healthy chocolate pb banana smoothie. She scooped the powders & peanut butter, peeled the bananas, and removed ice from the ice tray. I taught her which buttons to use on the blender. She was a little timid using the pulse button at first, but then became comfortable with it.

With a little side of sugar snap peas, we had ourselves a fancy kid-made meal for supper!

And, incredibly, the kids ate nearly every bite. Something about cooking it up yourself (or having big sister do it) makes it that much tastier 🙂

Arrow decided today that she would really like to practice making smoothies. Her goal is that “when I’m 8 years old, I can make all the smoothies, ALL BY MYSELF.”

Which is a pretty satisfying goal, if you think about it.

We’ll see what smoothie she comes up for us next week. Maybe we’ll start her on the traditional orange julius. Or maybe branch out with some recipes on Pinterest. I’ll have to see if the library has any kid cookbooks on smoothies for Arrow to experiment with.

Great job making dinner, Arrow! ❤ ❤ ❤
