Since Halloween is still a couple weeks away, it’s worth sharing this idea for any DIY party planners out there.
Some background: Arrow really took to the idea of “mystery meal” for her birthday last month and decided that would be her main activity for her little party.
Then a day or two before the party, she informed me that this party was actually a “magical unicorn” themed event.
How about… we just stick with what Mama already put together, hmm?
To please my tough crowd of a child, I let her pick out “magical” table decorations from Walmart, and our dear family friend Celest brought up Unicorn cupcakes for the children (while we adults hid in the kitchen and binged on party foods the kids didn’t know about).
Anyway, I realize this post is sounding UNCOMFORTABLY like a recipe blog so here are the files I made up for Arrow’s birthday party. Anybody is welcome to download and use this idea for their own parties 🙂
Children ordered off the menu from “The Fool’s Cafe”. Because they are a small crowd, (both in stature and age), I kept it simple by letting them choose different types of foods. Had they been teenagers, well, they’d get lucky if they paired a pitchfork to go with the rabbit kibble, (or paired their fork to go with their salad).
Here’s how the meal worked. I took each child’s order like so:
| Child name: Jose Drink: | Child name: Raquel Drink: | Child name: Alison Drink: | Child name: Kenny Drink: |
| Meal: | Meal: | Meal: | Meal: |
| Side: | Side: | Side: | Side: |
I corresponded their food choice with the number indicated on the menu:

And as each “round” finished, they would choose the next drink / main / side for the next round so that the kids rotated through all the options at least once.. The order sheet ended up looking like this by the end:
| Child name: Jose Drink: #2, #3, #1 | Child name: Raquel Drink: #1, #2, #3 |
| Meal: #5, #4, #6 | Meal: #4, #5, #6 |
| Side: #7, #9, #8 | Side: #7, #8, #9 |
Here’s the menu answer key:
| Drinks | |
| Under the Sea | water (or salt water if you particularly dislike this child) |
| Jack Frost | blue dyed milk |
| Witch’s Brew | Rootbeer |
| Main | |
| Three Little Pigs | li’l smokies |
| Rapunzel’s Hair | angel hair pasta and alfredo sauce |
| Leprechaun Gold | corn pop cereal |
| Side | |
| Dragon Scale | chips |
| Snow White | apple slices |
| Peter Rabbit | carrot sticks |
If I ever throw this party for teenagers, I’ll definitely set it up where they can receive their utensils out of order. I’d also have some some surprise unappetizing meal items like dill pickles, duck eggs, etc. I mean, it is called the Fool’s Cafe for a reason!
I think that about covers it… let me know in the comments if there are any questions. I hope you get the chance to throw a mystery meal of some kind! Happy halloween!
